Winter Activities

Snowmobiling in St. Anthony Snowmobiling on the spectacular groomed trails (surrounding St. Anthony) is by far the winter-time "sport of choice" for local residents..

There are hundreds of kilometres of snowmobile trails that travel through forests, valleys, and lake-dotted mountain tops..

Many residents have built small cabins in the wilderness, to spend weekends with family & friends (wood stove heating, etc).. Ice fishing - or, an outdoor "Boil up" is absolutely compulsory - alongside, a warm fire..

During the evening hours , the glow of snowmobile headlights can be seen everywhere.. After dark, these wilderness cabins become the social network of St. Anthony - and the fun really begins..

Hockey is played by many residents - with organized leagues (for all age groups) that play in the Olympia Sports arena.. Spectators can watch a 'live' hockey game almost every night in the winter months..

Olympia Sports Arena

The Olympia Sports arena also hosts the Northern Blades Figure Skating Club & the Junior Broomball Association.. As well, the ice surface is transformed into a curling rink once a week for the Mixed Curling Club..

Public skating is also regularly scheduled at the arena..

The Aurora Cross Country Skiing Centre has an extensive groomed trail system - which is illuminated at night.. The trails are a beautiful way to spend an afternoon - or evening..

Snowshoeing is a great way to get winter exercise.. Locally made snowshoes sell for about $25 - $50 and are amazingly functional.. Simply follow any of the hundreds of established snowmobile trails towards amazing scenery (and complete tranquility)..

Winter does not diminish hiking in the St. Anthony area.. Just follow virtually any snowmobile trail - which consists of hard, packed snow - and you can hike almost anywhere.. These snowmobile trails usually follow the most beautiful, scenic areas.. There is enough "elbow-space" that you will rarely encounter more than 2-3 snowmobiles during an afternoon walk.. Wear snowshoes for even greater flexibility.. You can purchase locally made snowshoes at several stores in St. Anthony (about $25-$50 CDN) - which are designed to work really well and reliably.. Winter hiking is incredibly beautiful in St. Anthony and surrounding region..
